Epilobium canum
Epilobium canum (Greene) P.H. Raven
Hummingbird Trumpet, California Fuchsia, Zauschneria
Onagraceae (Evening Primrose Family)
Synonym(s):
USDA Symbol: EPCA3
USDA Native Status: L48 (N)
A somewhat shrubby green or grayish plant, often with many branches with brilliant red, trumpet-shaped flowers blooming in profusion near ends, commonly all oriented in the same direction.
Related to the popular ornamental Fuchsias, most originally from the American tropics. In California, Zauschneria blooms late in the season, after the summer heat has turned grasses brown and driven most wildflowers to seed. The bright scarlet flowers produce nectar, supplying hummingbirds with food for the start of their southward migration.
